(RIE)TEACHING SECULARISM IN CLASSROOMS: IMPERATIVE NEED FOR COMMUNAL HARMONY AND WORLD PEACEEducation is considered the most important tool for the development of human resources and democratic values. In a democracy 'Secularism or Dharma nirpekshita', which is the soul of our constitution is the main support that maintains the country's democratic ethics. Secularism upholds democratic principles by ensuring equal rights and freedom of religion. People belonging to different culture and religions, share a common platform to understand each other's cultural and religious beliefs, which in turn fosters the feeling of mutual trust, understanding, and brotherhood.Today we see an immense feeling of mistrust, hatred, intolerance, and the growing disparities between genders, rich and poor and the upsurge of terrorism. especially in our youth. The degradation in human values and threat to secularism are serious concerns for all of us. We may observe desirable changes in our youth by not only teaching secularism through moral values in all schools and colleges, but also inculcating these values by giving some special training to every teacher and conducting various cultural and religious programs to develop the feeling of mutual trust, love, care and respect to all communities and religions for communal harmony and peace.Education in building a secular societyEducation plays a crucial role in building a secular society by promoting critical thinking, tolerance, understanding of diverse perspectives, and a value system that respects all religions and beliefs, essentially fostering an inclusive environment where people from different backgrounds can coexist harmoniously. This is achieved through curriculum design, teacher training, and fostering open dialogue within classrooms. Highlighting how schools can serve as crucial platforms to educate students about the principles of secularism, where they learn to respect different faiths without endorsing any one religion as superior can be understood by following points:
