Ram-Eesh Manjari 2024-2025 Institute of Engg. & Tech. 165INCULCATING NATIONALISM THROUGH ENGINEERING EDUCATIONNationalism is not just an emotion; it is an active commitment to the progress and integrity of our nation. As a civil engineering lecturer, I believe that engineering education offers a unique platform to imbibe this spirit of nationalism among students %u2014 not just through textbooks but through real-world relevance, community-driven projects, and pride in nation-building.Engineering as a Nation-Building DisciplineCivil Engineering, at its core, is about shaping the physical infrastructure of a nation - roads, bridges, water systems, public buildings, and urban planning. When I teach students about the design of a highway or a sustainable drainage system, I make sure that they understand who they are building it for: the people of India. Each beam they calculate, each soil test they perform, and each blueprint they draw is a contribution to India's growth.%u201cYou must be the change you wish to see in the world.%u201d - Mahatma GandhiThis quote finds relevance when we encourage young engineers to solve real problems in rural India, design disaster-resilient infrastructure, or contribute to smart city initiatives. Nationalism here becomes service through skill.%u201cAsk not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.%u201d - John F. Kennedy (USA)Apart from core subjects, I initiate discussions on topics like ethical engineering, sustainable development, urbanization challenges in India, and the role of engineers in disaster management. These sessions often open students' eyes to the broader responsibilities they carry - as engineers and as citizens.%u201cScientific thought and its creation is the common and shared heritage of mankind.%u201d - Jawaharlal NehruI regularly share stories of Indian engineers who have contributed significantly to national infrastructure like E. Sreedharan (Metro Man of India), or the construction of monumental projects like the Statue of Unity or the Atal Tunnel. Celebrating such achievements fosters aspiration and national pride among students.ConclusionAs a civil engineering lecturer, my mission goes beyond teaching concrete mix design or load-bearing structures. It is about nurturing a mindset that sees engineering as a service to the nation, not just a profession. When students realize that every pillar they raise could support a school, a hospital, or a bridge that connects lives, that is, when nationalism takes root in the true spirit.%u201c%u0935%u092f%u0902 %u0930%u093e %u0947 %u091c%u093e%u0917%u0943%u092f%u093e%u092e%u094d %u092a%u0941%u0930%u094b %u0939%u0924%u093e%u0903%u0964%u201dLet us awaken the nation through our leadership and knowledge.- RigvedaIn teaching civil engineering, we teach them to build not just structures, but also the nation.Rahul BhatiLecturerCivil Engineering Department
